FREQUENTLY ASKED NATURAL GAS QUESTIONS

Is it safe for the environment?
YES: Natural gas is clean – much cleaner than other fossil fuels. It emits less carbon dioxide – about 30% less than oil and 50% less than coal. This means that natural gas is part of the solution to global warming and we’re almost certain to rely more heavily on natural gas in the future in order to meet greenhouse gas targets.
Are we running out?
NO: Natural gas is very abundant in North America. In the past five years, shale reservoirs have revealed natural gas deposits that doubled previous estimated U.S. gas reserves - giving  us close to a 100-year supply. Plus, new reserves are being discovered every day, increasing our resources and potential production
Is it expensive?
NO: The traditional price comparison between a barrel of oil and one thousand cubic feet of natural gas (mcf) is a ratio of 6:1 because the energy content of six mcfs of natural gas is approximately equal to one barrel of oil. Even with today's changing  oil prices, natural gas remains a highly attractive alternative at its current price. Today, with its superiority as a clean fuel, natural gas provides even greater value to American consumers seeking solutions to ever-growing energy needs.
Are we dependent on other countries for it?
NO: The U.S. is dependent on foreign oil and this has led to a myth that we must be dependent on foreign natural gas as well. The fact is, much of the gas used in the U.S. comes from Canada and other North American regions. Altogether, about 99% of the natural gas we use is produced right here in North America.
What is involved with drilling?
Chesapeake is nationally known as an industry leader, using the most advanced drilling and completion technologies to ensure public and environmental safety. We seek drillsites that will minimize disruption to any neighborhood or the environment, while still producing the most for our investors. The steps to the drilling process are as follows:

First, a padsite is prepared to hold the drilling rig and related equipment.

Next, the well is drilled, completed and connected to a pipeline to transport the gas to market.

Finally, the padsite is appropriately reduced, reclaimed or landscaped to blend in with its surroundings and to meet individual city ordinances.
How long will it take?
From the time the pad preparation begins for a single well, the entire process of setting up the rig, drilling, fracture stimulating and installing operational equipment takes two to eight weeks.* Even with multiple-well padsites, the drilling and completion process frequently takes less time than building a house or retail store in the same area.

During the approximately three weeks of drilling, operations run continuously 24 hours a day until completed. Hydraulic fracturing may take three or four additional days and is usually restricted to daylight hours.

*The duration of drilling and production time will vary from well to well, depending on drilling depth, location, formation and numerous other variables associated with exploration and production.
How do pipelines work?
Pipelines are necessary to get the natural gas from the wellhead to the market. While the diameter of the pipeline may vary with its function, natural gas pipelines are all similar to normal utility pipelines that currently deliver gas to your home or office, and thus pose no additional safety issues. New pipelines may be installed through traditional open trenching, boring underneath the ground or a combination of the two.
What are royalties?
A royalty is a recurring payment made by the operator to the person owning the mineral rights to the natural gas a well produces. The amount of the payment is based on a percentage of a well’s production and on the price the operating company is paid for the natural gas. Royalty payments start after natural gas is produced and sold, and these payments continue for the life of the well – which could be 20 or more years

CCF – One Hundred Cubic Feet
One CCF is one hundred cubic feet of natural gas at standard distribution pressure of 14.73 pounds per square inch and 60° Fahrenheit.

Christmas tree – The arrangement of pipes and valves at the wellhead to control the flow of oil or natural gas and to prevent blowouts. (See Wellhead)

CNG – Compressed Natural Gas

Completion – The procedure by which a successful well is readied for production.

Compressor station – Stations located along natural gas pipelines which recompress gas to ensure an even flow.

Conventional Resource – Any area where natural gas can be drilled and extracted vertically.

Cubic foot – The amount of natural gas required at room temperature at sea level to fill a volume of one cubic foot.

Derrick/Drilling Rig – A steel structure mounted over the borehole to support the drill pipe and other equipment that is lowered and raised during drilling operations.

Directional drilling – A technique that enables drilling at an angle to reach a particular underground formation.

DOE – Department of Energy
A cabinet-level federal agency created in 1977 to replace the Federal Energy Administration. The DOE manages national energy policy, nuclear power and nuclear weapons programs, and the national energy research labs.

Drilling permit – Authorization from a regulatory agency to drill a well.

Drillbit – Tool used in drilling to break up rock mechanically in order to penetrate the subsoil. The bit drills a circular hole.

EIA – Energy Information Administration
An agency within the U.S. Department of Energy. EIA provides energy data, forecasts and analyses.

Flaring – The controlled and safe burning of gas which cannot be used for commercial or technical reasons.

Fracturing – The pumping of a media, typically water, sand and chemical additives, into a reservoir with a controlled force to fracture reservoir rock, resulting in a greater flow of natural gas or oil from the reservoir.

Gas processing plant – A facility which extracts liquefiable hydrocarbons or sulfur from natural gas and/or fractionates a liquid stream.

Gathering – The process of collecting natural gas flowing from numerous wells and bringing it together into pooling areas where it is received into transmission pipelines.

Gathering lines – Pipelines that move natural gas or petroleum from wells to processing or transmission facilities.

GGE – Gasoline Gallon Equivalent

Horizontal drilling – An advanced form of directional drilling in which the lateral hole is drilled horizontally.

Landman – The individual in an oil and gas company or agent who negotiates oil and gas leases with mineral owners, cures title defects and negotiates with other companies on agreements concerning the lease.

LDC – Local Distribution Company

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) – Natural gas that has been cooled into a liquid state so that it takes up only 1/600 of the volume of natural gas.

Bill Types of suigas

Normal Bill

In general, pressure factor is applied for the calculation of corrected volume of gas consumed for commercial consumers, while pressure, temperature and super compressibility factors are applied to work out corrected volume of gas consumed by Industrial / Bulk supply consumers.
Estimated (Provisional) Bill

Index glass dirty/Misty.
Water inside meter.
Meter covered with dust.
Meter covered with bushes.
Meter under rain water.
Meter installed above normal height.
Meter position not approachable.
Meter locked inside the premises.

Premises not found.
Estimated (Provisional) bill is based on the consumption of corresponding period of preceding year, or immediate preceding bill or trend of same category of the locality respectively.
Estimated (Provisional) bill is adjusted in next normal bill when actual meter reading is available.
Minimum Bill
Minimum bill is issued when consumption is nil/zero or below the prescribed consumption limit as per rates notified by Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) for all categories of consumers. Minimum charges of some categories, as notified by OGRA, are as follows. These charges are exclusive of meter rent and General Sales Tax (GST).

CONICAL BAFFILS

RAWALPINDI (APP) - The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has introduced a new technology to save up to 33pc natural gas consumed by geysers during the winter season, said Deputy Chief, SNGPL Islamabad Region, Squadron Leader (R) Javed Khan.
Talking to APP here on Thursday he said the device has been indigenously developed by the SNGPLs Business Development Department and it is now being installed on experimental basis in Islamabad and Lahore.

We have installed about 1,000 cone baffles in Islamabad and an equal number in Lahore and their results would be assessed in March by comparing the individuals gas bills with the previous year ones, he added.

Javed Khan said only the Islamabad region, ranging from Sarai Alamgir to Attock, has about 650,000 consumers and about 500,000 of them have installed geysers to get warm water in winter months.

He said if the projects results prove positive then the product would be outsourced and all the 2 million SNGPLs consumers could reduce their gas bills by using this technology.
Describing the new technology he said a stainless steel made cone filled with gypsum powder is inserted into the geysers tank which helps in heating water evenly from top to bottom in a shorter period of time.
